Kentucky will receive nearly $6.5 million from a $220 million national settlement with General Motors, Attorney General Russell Coleman announced Oct. 29. The states accused GM of selling information about how people drove and where they drove to outside companies without getting proper consent. According to the Attorney General's office, insurers used some of that data to raise rates. The office says GM signed drivers up for its Smart Driver program when they enrolled in OnStar between 2016 and 2024, that sales employees received bonuses tied partly to those enrollments, and that dealerships were ranked by enrollment numbers. GM has since ended the program. Under the settlement, GM must get a driver's consent before collecting or sharing driving and location data, must limit the data it collects and protect personal information, and will face oversight and training requirements at its dealerships. Kentucky was one of 36 states in the coalition, and Coleman served on its executive committee, the release says. Washington and Oregon co-led the group. "We are committed to protecting Kentuckians, their data privacy and their wallets," Coleman said. Source: Kentucky Attorney General's office release, Oct. 29, 2026.
